As the webmaster for the Palomar Mountain District, my desire is to provide a link to all units within the district that have their own website. However, I am bound to a set of policies which govern my ability to link the unit websites. Just as the San Diego-Imperial Council website is an extension of the BSA National website, and the Palomar Mountain District website is an extension of the San Diego-Imperial Council website, unit websites are extensions of the Palomar Mountain District website. As such, there are certain policies that the webmasters for the units are strongly encouraged (per council) to follow. Learn more.
One of the biggest problems with unit websites is related to financial considerations regarding the costs involved with the hosting party. Because of that, many webmasters go to "free" hosts to avoid ongoing costs. These hosts are not truely free because use banners (static or pop-up) to generate the revenue lost due to "free" hosting. Because the unit webmasters have no control over the content of those banners, using these "free" hosting sites is unacceptable (read the policies page).
Fortunately, there are hosting sites that recognize the BSA policies against banners, and understand the financial strains that using a banner free host would place on individual units. These sites bear the cost of operation via other means, methods that are supported by BSA. Some of these services are: ScoutLander.com, ScoutingPages.org. If you have other hosting sites that you'd like to recommend, send your suggestion to Webmaster.
To have your unit's website linked from the Palomar Mountain District website, send an e-mail to the Webmaster.
